Hard drive

Interesting info about the development of hard drive technology.
IBM introduced the hard drive (RAMAC) in 1956; it stored 5 MB in an enclosure the size of a refrigerator, and cost $150 thousand.

Now you know why

A well known anecdote about Khrushchev.
During his years as premier of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev denounced many of the policies and atrocities of Joseph Stalin. Once, as he censured Stalin in a public meeting, Khrushchev was interrupted by a shout from a heckler in the audience. “You were one of Stalin’s colleagues. Why didn’t you stop him?”

“Who said that?” roared Khrushchev. An agonizing silence followed as nobody in the room dared move a muscle. Then Khrushchev replied quietly, “Now you know why.”

42

It's 42 degrees Farenheit out. At 3 pm. In San Diego.

To quote a famous person:

"I want to live long enough to see if they are right about global warming.
I hear it's a bunch of crap!"
- Homer Simpson

Build (II)

Don't remember where I got this one, but it seems about right.
I calculated the amount of time I'd need to compile a sizable application in C++ and I realized that, assuming Moore's law holds, it will be done quickest if I don't buy any hardware to run the build until the year 2020.

Build

For which of you having a mind to build a tower,
doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary,
whether he have wherewithal to finish it:
Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it,
all that see it begin to mock him,
Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

- Luke 14:28-30

Logins

Logins on Linux seem to be put together with bailing wire and duct tape. And some Pam.

That is all.
